LiTG Nachwuchspreis
Licht, Technik, und Gestaltung, Kategorie 2: Dissertationen
LiTG Young Talent Award in Light, Technology and Design,
Category 2: Dissertations

I’m thrilled to share that my dissertation on ‘The Environmental Impact of Artificial Lighting in Urban Settings: Gaps, Challenges and Sustainable Lighting Design‘ has been awarded the LiTG Nachwuchspreis Licht, Technik, und Gestaltung (LiTG Young Talent Award in Light, Technology and Design), in the Category II: Dissertations, by the LiTG, Deutsche Gesellschaft für LichtTechnik und LichtGestaltung e. V.
What a humbling moment to be standing at the DIN, Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. in Berlin and to then present 6 years, maybe more, of research to the members and committee of the LiTG.
On Friday, Nov 21st, I had the opportunity to share the hardship that emerged at the interface of ecology and lighting design. It integrates a deep commitment to transdisciplinary collaboration, and it’s a win not only for me but also for the team of light pollution researchers and lighting designers involved in understanding, translating, and transferring ecological awareness.
With this project, we established:
• Transdisciplinary collaborations and communication frameworks to translate and transfer ecological knowledge into the lighting practice
• Addressed the challenges of measuring light pollution in the river Spree in Berlin
• Developed recommendations and environmentally-friendly lighting solutions when light is needed close to waterbodies.
We shared the need for a lighting practice that integrates biodiversity thresholds and recognises light as a potential pollutant. We are in urgent need of respectful and careful approaches to designing with light.
This recognition from LiTG, Deutsche Gesellschaft für LichtTechnik und LichtGestaltung e. V. represents visibility and inclusion of perspectives and practices in favor of reducing light pollution to preserve natural darkness and night ecology.
